A band called Death played in my town yesterday, as part of the international documentary film festival (IDFA). Death was established by the Hackney brothers from Detroit, who played what is now called protopunk: rock music which build the foundations for punk rock. In their short existence, Death released one 7″ (Politicians in My Eyes & Keep on Knocking) in 1976 before reuniting in 2009 after finally being recognized as ground breaking rockers. Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino made a documentary about the Hackney brothers, for the showing of which Death traveled to the Netherlands and performed an electrifying live show in the cellar of Vera. Death, with a replacement for brother David who passed away in 2000, rocked the stage with great passion, with a very enthusiastic public as a result. Death promised to release a new album coming up spring 2013.
